Blood Test Results

When your GP arranges for you to submit a blood test/ urine sample/ stool sample the result will usually come back about a week later. Please note that some tests may take longer than this.

In all cases, due to the significant number of results coming through to the surgery each day, the surgery will not automatically contact patients if a result is abnormal, or if any action is required. Patients should therefore ring the surgery or go online (using SystmOnline or the NHS app) to get their results.

X-ray and scan reports can take longer than this to come back to your GP. As with other tests, we will not routinely contact you about the result, even if there is an abnormality. Please go online or ring reception after 1pm for your results. Please note that MRI reports are currently taking up to 4 months to come back from the hospital.

Please note that we cannot report on any tests that were arranged by another service, i.e. a hospital or other community services. You will need to contact the service that originally requested the test to obtain your result. Tests which are arranged by hospital clinicians should be discussed directly between you and the hospital as they do not automatically come back to your GP.

Our reception team will be able to tell you if your result is normal or not, and if any further action is required. However, please bear in mind that they are not clinicians, and therefore are unable to discuss the meaning of these results with you.
